As Florida and the rest of the country wait to hear how Donald Trump plans to retreat from his inhumane policy mandating the separation of children from their parents detained at the border, state Senator Daphne Campbell (D-Miami) called for state officials’ actions to continue.
“Unless and until we see the Trump Administration not only halt his cruel policy, but reunite these children with their parents, we cannot stay silent,” said Senator Campbell. “Up until recently, Governor Scott resisted even holding the Trump Administration accountable for his executive action. Every one of us has a duty to speak up and speak out against this inhumanity.”
As the first Haitian State Senator, an immigrant, and a mother, Senator Campbell said that she understood all too well the challenges and fears of immigrants seeking refuge in a new country, let alone those traumatized a second time by having their children taken from them.
“Governor Scott and the president have a special relationship that gives him an advantage in making the case for ceasing this policy,” said Senator Campbell. “He needs to continue to press for this travesty to end.”
