CARE FL to Survey Federal, State and Local Candidates to Assess Position on All Aboard Florida/Brightline

Posted on June 26, 2018

Citizens Against Rail Expansion in Florida (CARE FL) today announced that the CARE FL Candidate Report Card 2018 survey is being sent to candidates seeking public office for the following seats: U.S. Senate, Congressional Districts 8, 18 and 20, Governor, the Florida Legislature, and county and select city commissions in the Treasure Coast region– some 76 in total.

“For the past four years, we have worked closely with elected leaders, business leaders and first responders in this region to educate the public on the negative impacts of the All Aboard Florida/Brightline high speed train,” said Jane Feinstein, member of the CARE FL Steering Committee who serves as the chairman of the group’s survey initiative. “The candidate report card is an important tool for voters as they seek to learn more about the candidates and their positions on matters important to our communities.”

The 2018 survey has twelve questions to survey candidates’ position on the project. The survey also asks what actions candidates have taken or will take if elected. Responses are due back to CARE FL by Friday, July 13, so that results can be compiled and shared with voters in advance of early voting and the August 28 Florida primary.

In 2016, CARE FL issued its first report card after surveying more than 100 candidates.

“In 2016 CARE FL recognized several candidates as Champions, while others received letter grades ranging from an A to an F,” said Brent Hanlon, Chairman of the CARE FL Steering Committee. “We believe rail safety is a top priority in our region and we believe that candidates seeking to serve our communities also recognize the importance of addressing this issue and are willing to do what they can to protect Floridians.”

Hanlon also added that CARE FL is especially grateful to federal, state and local candidates and elected officials who have gone the extra mile to show leadership throughout this process.
