The Florida Student Association on Thursday recognized Representative Amber Mariano from the Florida House of Representatives as its 2018 Friend of FSA.
Representative Mariano has made the students of the State University System of Florida a top priority during the 2018 Legislative Session and has worked tirelessly to ensure that students have all the resources they need to be successful during their time at the university.
She has worked to expand Bright Futures Scholarships for students, making college more affordable. Additionally, she helped pass legislation to eliminate the excess credit hour surcharge for students who graduate in four years, which also brings down student costs. Representative Mariano has worked closely with the Florida Student Association on legislation that will enhance the student experience for years to come.
“The Florida Student Association is pleased to express our appreciation to Representative Mariano, who works so hard to make positive changes for students,” said Jalisa White, FSA president and member of the Board of Governors. “We are thankful to have her fighting for us in Tallahassee.”
“As a recent graduate of UCF, I have been proud to make progress on issues that are important for students as well as many families in our community,” said Representative Mariano. “I thank the Florida Student Association for its recognition and support, and I look forward to continuing to work together for the benefit of students.”
This award, in its inaugural year, is designed to thank and recognize elected leaders who serve university students and put the State University System, as one of their top priorities during the legislative session.

The Florida Student Association is aboard comprised of all 12 Student Body Presidents in the State University System. This board lobbies and advocates for all students and universities in the SUS. The system has 12 universities and more than 345,000 students, making it the second-largest public university system in the nation. Florida Student Association elects a Chair who serves on the Florida Board of Governors as the student voice.
