Daytona State College’s Alumni Association welcomes nominations for its annual awards recognizing exemplary service to the college. Nominees for the three categories – Alumni of the Year, Distinguished Faculty/Staff Alumni, and Young Alumni Excellence Award – are due by August 10.
Awards
- The Alumni of the Year Award recognizes and honors alumni who represent the best of Daytona State by bringing positive change to their community, state, nation or the world.
- The Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award recognizes current or former faculty or staff of Daytona State who have demonstrated consistent dedication and superior service at the college.
- The Young Alumni Excellence Award recognizes the exceptional professional achievements of a young alumnus and/or alumna of Daytona State who has made outstanding contributions to his or her community.
- The Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science is determined by the science faculty and is not part of the nomination packet.
Awards History
With the exception of the Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science award, the alumni awards were first presented in 2014. Frank Lombardo, a longtime mathematics professor who also served as senior vice president for academic affairs and interim president during his 30-year career with Daytona State, received the Association’s Distinguished Faculty and Staff Award. Dr. T.K. Wetherell, a former college vice president, received the Association’s Distinguished Service Award. In 2015 area dentist Dr. Barry Cates was presented with the Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science. In 2016 recipients included: Carl Barden received the Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science, Alumni of the Year Award was presented to Ben Johnson, Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award was presented to Dan Biferie, and Young Alumni Excellence Award was presented to Hannah Lucien. In 2017 Dr. Mikael Jones received the Margaret Crumley Award for Distinguished Achievement in Science, Alumni of the Year honors went to Dixie Morgese, Distinguished Faculty/Staff Alumni Award went to Bill Tillard, and entrepreneur Chris Gilpin was presented the Young Alumni Excellence Award.

Winners will be recognized during DSC’s Homecoming 2018 activities, set for Wednesday, Oct. 11, at 8:30 a.m. in the college’s Conference Center, 1200 W. International Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach Campus. Nominations are due to the Alumni Association by Friday, August 10.
