U.S. Congressman Brian Mast (FL-18) today chaired his first hearing as Chairman of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee. The hearing focused on Coast Guard modernization and recapitalization, including deploying new technology to combat both cyber and physical threats against the United States.
Rep. Mast was named chairman on September 17, 2018. The Coast Guard’s many missions include oil spill prevention and response, enforcement of marine pollution laws and coastal border security. The Subcommittee also has jurisdiction over other marine environmental protections.
“Maritime transportation is a critical issue for Florida and the Coast Guard has an important presence in our state, which is why I asked Chairman Bill Shuster for the opportunity to take on leadership of this subcommittee,” Rep. Mast said at the time. “The Coast Guard plays an essential role in maintaining the rule of law on our waterways, including securing our borders and enforcing marine pollution laws. Working together, I’m confident we can ensure they have the tools they need to succeed at these critical missions.”
