Broward’s NFL YET Boys & Girls Club Receives PSC’s Triple E Award

Posted on October 3, 2018

The NFL Youth Education Town (YET) Lester H. White Boys & Girls Club in Broward County helps improve clients’ lives by building self-esteem and developing values and skills. And, by teaching another life lesson—the importance of energy efficiency—the club has achieved the Florida Public Service Commission’s (PSC) third quarter Triple E Award for Energy Efficiency.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County (BGCBC) help young people plan for the future and participate in citizenship and leadership training,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham. “We commend the NFL YET Lester H. White Club for not only saving energy so it can better deliver its mission, but also for promoting energy conservation, an important lesson for young people to learn today for their future.”

In 2016, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) completed a Business Energy Evaluation at the club. Lighting-related costs represented a large part of the club’s energy bill. Through FPL’s Business Lighting Program, the club upgraded its gym and has saved more than $1,000 a year on lighting. Overall, these upgrades have contributed to more than $12,600 in energy bill savings since implementation.

“The new gym lighting is brighter and uses less energy, while producing less heat,” said Brian Quail, President/CEO of BGCBC. “As a result, the club’s air conditioning system cools more efficiently, particularly during warmer summer months. We appreciate FPL working with us.”

“It was a pleasure to work with the NFL YET Lester H. White Boys & Girls Club to help the organization meet its goals to improve energy efficiency and help lower its energy bill,” said Brad Gunter, FPL Manager of DSM Energy Efficiency Programs. “Through these savings, the organization is able to deliver on its mission to support children and families in the community.”

Covering the state’s five major geographic areas, each quarter the PSC presents its Triple E Award to a local business that has accomplished superior energy efficiency.  Look for past Triple E Award recipients under Hot Topics on the PSC’s homepage. The PSC encourages cost-effective conservation and renewable energy to reduce the use of fossil fuels and defer the need for new generating capacity through the Florida Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act.
