The 31st annual Great American Jazz Series, sponsored by the University of North Florida’s School of Music, will feature the U.S. Navy Commodores Jazz Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in the Andrew A. Robinson Jr. Theater, Building 14A, on the UNF campus.
The Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble, has been performing the very best of big band jazz for the Navy and the nation for almost 50 years. They have appeared on TV shows, played nearly all major jazz festivals and toured across the United States and abroad.
One of the U.S. Navy Band’s primary responsibilities involves touring the country. All of the band’s primary performing ensembles embark each year on concert tours throughout specified regions of the country, allowing the band to reach audiences in areas of the country that don’t have opportunities to see the Navy’s premier musical ensembles on a regular basis.
This event is free and open to the public; however, there is a suggested scholarship donation of $10. For more information about this event, contact Kolanda Douglas, School of Music marketing coordinator, at (904) 620-2864.
The U.S. Navy Band is the flagship musical organization of the Navy and one of 11 Navy bands located around the world. The Commodores Jazz Ensemble is one of six performing ensembles in the Navy Band, which has been touring the country since 1925.
UNF, a nationally ranked university located on an environmentally beautiful campus, offers students who are dedicated to enriching the lives of others the opportunity to build their own futures through a well-rounded education.
