Mobility Week Event in Daytona Beach

Posted on October 26, 2018

White Cane Event Starts off Central Florida Events

Mobility Week gets underway this weekend with a White Cane/Pedestrian Safety Awareness event hosted by a coalition of organizations, which aims to educate drivers, and others, about pedestrian safety laws; specifically, about the White Cane Law that requires drivers to come to a complete stop for pedestrians with a white cane, guide dog or mobility aid.

The event is Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. – noon, near Daytona State College at the intersection of White Street and West International Speedway Blvd. The event is open to the public, and will start with proclamations from Volusia County and the City of Daytona Beach, followed by a walk on all four crossings. NASCAR Celebrity Scott Lagasse, Jr., is appearing to promote multimodal transportation and safety on behalf of Alert Today Florida, a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) initiative.

Other partners include

  • National Federation of the Blind
  • Halifax Council of the Blind
  • River to Sea Transportation Planning Organization
  • Daytona Beach Mayor’s Alliance for People with Disabilities
  • Daytona Beach Police Department
  • Volusia County Sheriff’s Office

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and its Central Florida partner agencies are observing the third annual Mobility Week from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3. Events are being hosted throughout the duration of Mobility Week within the nine-county Central Florida region – Brevard, Flagler, Lake, Marion, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Sumter, and Volusia counties.

The Mobility Week initiative is an annual collection of outreach events to promote awareness of safe multimodal transportation choices and how those choices can build stronger communities, reduce traffic congestion and improve community health.
