SunRail Testing Continues on the Corridor

Posted on November 2, 2018

Overnight(s) and Weekends

Look for SunRail trains running overnight and on weekends as SunRail’s Positive Train Control (PTC) implementation project continues forward. Functional integration testing is occurring during the month of November. This type of testing is typically done during the latter phases of PTC implementation. No riders are aboard the trains during these tests, just train testing personnel.

Drivers and passersby can expect to see a test train on the railroad tracks between Sanford and Longwood, operating over a 13-mile section. The testing time is anticipated to occur from 8 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. week nights during the first two weeks of November, and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily for three weekends. Testing is occurring on either track in both directions, stopping frequently to capture data.

PTC implementation is expected on the 13-mile section by the end of this year. Full implementation on the entire 61.5-mile Central Florida Rail Corridor is expected by the end of 2019. PTC computer technology prevents trains from going too fast and prevents collisions between trains that are on the same track. SunRail has received $17 million in federal grants for PTC implementation.

Please be careful around trains, railroad crossings, and while at station platforms. Be smart. Be safe. For more information about SunRail, including fares, schedule and station locations, please visit sunrail.com.
