Florida Legislative Black Caucus Supports Judicial Nominating Commissions Reform

Posted on December 12, 2018

Rep. Bruce Antone, Chair of Florida Legislative
Black Caucus supports move for JNC reform

State Representative Bruce Antone, Chairman of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, issued the following statement today in support of SB 138 Judicial Nominating Commissions, legislation filed by Senator Perry Thurston to reform Florida’s Judicial Nominating Commission:

“The Legislative Black Caucus supports Senator Thurston’s legislation to reform the current system to select judicial appointments. We believe diversity is critical in our judicial process, especially on Florida’s highest court. Without it, there is a very real danger that the voices of millions of Floridians – the multitude of those in any minority – are silenced, and excluded from the guaranteed protections of equal treatment and equal justice under the law.

“We respectfully ask Governor-elect DeSantis to revisit the current state of the judicial selection process, and embrace the inclusivity this legislation promises to deliver.”
