FOR WEEK OF DECEMBER 16, 2018
This weekly report is prepared by Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) to inform the public about upcoming road work in Southwest Florida. Below are the work schedule and lane closure locations for major state road projects.
Motorists are reminded to wear safety belts and drive with caution, courtesy, common sense, and patience as they travel through work zones. Remember, speeding fines are doubled in work zones.

HARDEE COUNTY
US 17 from north of 3rd Street East to the RV Park Entrance in Zolfo Springs: Construction project: Crews will drill and pour signal foundations. Watch for workers close to the road and trucks entering and leaving the roadway. Most additional work will occur after the first of the year. This project includes milling and resurfacing, drainage improvements, curb and gutter, signing and pavement marking and signalization. The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC. Expected completion is Fall 2019.
SR 66 from Johnson Motor Home Park Road to South Hammock Road: Maintenance contracts project: Crews will be milling and resurfacing SR 66 from Johnson Motor Home Park Road to South Hammock Road. Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures. Expect delays and use caution in these areas. The contractor is Cheyenne Incorporated.
SR 64 from Manatee County Line to West Main Street in Wauchula: Construction project: Crews continue paving from the Manatee County line to the railroad tracks in Ona. Watch for flaggers directing traffic and be prepared to stop. This project includes milling and resurfacing, shoulder work, drainage improvements, signing and pavement marking. The contractor is Ajax Paving Industries of Florida LLC. Expected completion is Fall 2019.
SR 64 from Elm Street to School House Road: Maintenance contracts project: Crews will be milling and resurfacing SR 64 from Elm Street to School House Road. Motorists should expect intermittent single-lane closures. Expect delays and use caution in these areas. The contractor is Cheyenne Incorporated.
HIGHLANDS COUNTY
US 98 at Garden Terrace in Spring Lake: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a new treatment plant including a new driveway connection to US 98. Watch for workers close to the roadway with shoulder closures. Watch for trucks and equipment entering and leaving the roadway.
US 98 from Ashton to Oak Avenue: Maintenance contracts project: Crews will be cleaning out drainage culverts on US 98 from Ashton Drive to Oak Avenue. Watch for temporary daytime shoulder closures. Use caution and be prepared to stop. There will be trucks and equipment entering and leaving the roadway. This project is scheduled from November 19 through end of December.
US 98 from US 27 to Ashton Drive: Maintenance contracts project: Crews will be replacing drainage culverts on US 98 from US 27 to Ashton Drive. Watch for temporary daytime shoulder closures. Crews will be replacing driveway pipes and repairing damaged concrete around pipes. This will ensure drainage is functioning properly and failing pipes are being maintained. Use caution and be prepared to stop. Watch for trucks and equipment entering and leaving the roadway. This project is scheduled from November 19 through the end of December.
US 27 from West Townsend Street to Batts Street and on SR 64 from US 27 to Self-Avenue: Construction project: Crews are replacing existing roadway with concrete pavement on US 27 southbound from West Pleasant Street to Paulk Street, US 27 northbound from Dyal Street to West Hill Street, and on SR 64 from Self Avenue to US 27. The contractor is also milling and resurfacing the existing roadway on US 27 from West Townsend Street to Batts Street and on SR 64 from Collier Avenue to Self-Avenue, installing curb and gutter, installing traffic separators, sidewalks, traffic signals, street lights, and signing and pavement markers. A single continuous lane closure on US 27 will be in place during intersection construction.
- All US 27 traffic lanes have shifted eastward and reduced to two lanes in each direction.
- North Hart Avenue on westbound SR 64 is closed to traffic. Please follow detour signs and watch for workers in the construction zone.
- The SR 64 eastbound traffic lane has shifted temporarily to the right. Please use caution through this area and watch for workers in the construction zone.
- SR 64 westbound traffic has shifted to the south onto the newly constructed concrete road. Please use caution through this area and watch for workers in the construction zone.
Additional lane closures, single-lane flagging operations, and temporary lane shifts will occur during nighttime/overnight hours on US 27 and SR 64. The contractor is Concrete Services, LLC. Estimated project completion date is early 2020.
US 17 (Lakeview Drive) between Mellow Lane and Kenilworth Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Watch for southbound lane closures with traffic using the center turn lane as crews relocate existing cables and remove old power poles. Watch for trucks entering and exiting the site. Use caution and watch for crews working close to the roadway.
SR 70 from US 27 to CR 721: Maintenance project: Crews will perform weed control and tree trimming along the guardrail in this area. Motorists should use caution and expect intermittent lane closures eastbound and westbound from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
SR 70 at Bony Lane: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a new driveway connection to SR 70. Watch for workers close to the roadway with shoulder closures. Watch for trucks and equipment entering and leaving the roadway.
SR 70 near the DeSoto County line: Maintenance permit project: Crews will be installing a utility pole with helicopter support. Motorists should use caution and expect eastbound and westbound intermittent lane closures on SR 70 near the DeSoto County line from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 27 through early December.
SR 70 near the DeSoto County line: Maintenance permit project: Crews will be installing utility poles at the back of the right-of-way. Motorists should use caution and watch for crews working on SR 70 from the DeSoto County line to US 27.
SR 66 from US 27 to CR 635: Maintenance project: Crews will be cleaning ditches along SR 66 from US 27 to CR 635. Motorists should expect intermittent east and westbound lane closures on SR 66 Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please use caution and watch for crews working close to the roadway.
SR 17 from North of Arbuckle Creek Road to north of Rialto Avenue: Construction project: Watch for daytime lane closures as crews continue widening for the turn lane. This project includes widening to add a southbound left turn lane from SR 17 to Arbuckle Creek Road, milling and resurfacing from Arbuckle Creek Road to Rialto Avenue and 300 feet of Arbuckle Creek Road, shoulder work, curb and gutter and signing and pavement markings. The contractor is Lynch Paving and Construction Co. Expected completion is spring 2019.
MANATEE COUNTY
301 Boulevard at Whitfield Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on utilities. Expect nighttime/overnight intermittent east and westbound lane closures from 9 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. each morning the week of Sunday, December 16. Use caution and expect possible delays.
I-275 at the Sunshine Skyway Rest Areas in Manatee and Pinellas Counties: Construction project: Improvements include constructing new rest areas and new parking lots with LED lighting, seawall repairs and extending the seawall at the Manatee County rest area to accommodate a new picnic pavilion. The Pinellas County Skyway Rest Area is closed for renovations. During this time, motorists will be directed to the Manatee County Skyway Rest Area. The closure is expected to last until fall 2018. The fishing piers will remain open during the closure. Construction is on-going on the new rest area site and the seawall on the Manatee side, west of I-275. Expected completion of both rest areas is fall 2019. David Nelson Construction Company is the contractor.
I-275 Southbound Ramp to I-75 Northbound (Exit 228): Construction project: Crews are replacing the concrete bridge deck on the southbound I-275 ramp to northbound I-75. The I-275 southbound ramp to northbound I-75 is closed for approximately ten (10) months. Traffic is being detoured north on US 41/S Tamiami Trail to SR 674/E College Avenue in Hillsborough County. A temporary traffic signal has been installed on US 41 at the southbound I-275 exit. Periodic nighttime/overnight I-75 northbound/southbound and I-275 southbound lane closures beneath I-275 will occur during construction. There will be nighttime/overnight northbound and southbound lane closures on I-75 the week of Sunday, December 16. Motorists should also expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on the I-275 southbound to I-75 southbound ramp from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m for the next two weeks. The I-75 northbound ramp to I-275 will be closed overnight on Sunday, December 16. Motorists should exit at the Moccasin Wallow exit and re-enter I-75 southbound to the I-275 northbound ramp. Use caution and watch for changes in the traffic pattern. Expected completion is summer 2019. Cone & Graham, Inc. is the contractor.
I-75 at SR 70 Interchange (Exit 217): Construction project: This week, crews will work on clearing vegetation, retaining walls, drainage improvements, lighting, and SR 70 median work.
- Motorists should expect lane closures on I-75 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8.45 p.m. to 6 a.m. (northbound) or 8.00 p.m. to 5 a.m. (southbound) through the duration of the construction.
- Motorists should expect lane closures on SR 70 during nighttime/overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. through the duration of the construction.
- Motorists should expect lane shifts on I-75 and SR 70 through the duration of the construction.
- Drivers should exercise caution and be aware of construction vehicles entering and exiting the interstate through the duration of the construction.
Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Estimated completion is late 2021. The contractor is Sacyr Construction USA, LLC.
I-75 at SR 64 (Manatee Avenue) Interchange (Exit 220): Construction project: This week, crews are currently widening and resurfacing southbound I-75 and performing ramp, grading, lighting, and drainage work, and SR 64 reconstruction.
- Motorists are advised that one lane closure in each direction on SR 64 may occur during the overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. throughout the duration of the project.
- Motorists are advised that one lane closure in each direction on I-75 may occur during the overnight hours between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. throughout the duration of the project.
This project reconstructs the interchange, widens interchange ramps and SR 64, and installs sidewalks and bicycle lanes on SR 64. Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in this area. Estimated completion is late 2019. The contractor is Prince Contracting LLC.
I-75 at the University Parkway Interchange (Exit 213): Construction project: Crews are installing landscaping and irrigation systems at the I-75 and University Parkway interchange. Lane closures on I-75, if needed, will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Lane closures on University Parkway, if needed, will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Estimated completion is spring 2019. The contractor is Frankie Valdez Company, Inc.
US 301 from CR 675 to Moccasin Wallow Road: Construction project: Crews are installing new landscaping, irrigation and welcome signs. Superior Landscaping & Lawn Services is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2018.
Business US 41 (9th Street W) at the Green Bridge; at 3rd Avenue W, and from 3rd Avenue W to SR 64 (Manatee Avenue): Construction project: Crews are constructing a multi-use path; constructing sidewalk; improving drainage; constructing turn lanes, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures on Business US 41 (9th Street W) from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews are working. The outside southbound lane on Business US 41 over the Green Bridge is closed to traffic while the contractor is working on the concrete barrier wall. For safety purposes, the lane will remain closed 24/7. Please plan additional travel time.Estimated completion is spring 2019. The contractor is Gosalia Concrete Constructors, Inc.
US 41 at Moccasin Wallow Road: Construction project: Crews are constructing turn lanes, resurfacing the roadway, improving drainage on Moccasin Wallow Road at US 41. Expect daytime and nighttime lane closures while construction is ongoing. Estimated completion is early 2019. Blacktip Services Incorporated is the contractor.
SR 789/Gulf Drive from SR 64 (Manatee Avenue) to SR 684 (Cortez Road): Maintenance permit project: Manatee County is installing new force mains and water mains. For additional information about the project, please visit the project website at www.amipipereplacement.com.
SR 789 at the Longboat Key Club: Maintenance permit project: Crews are working on the roadway. Southbound traffic will be shifted into the center of the roadway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, December 17. Use caution and expect possible delays.
SR 70 (15th Street E) at 9th Avenue E: Construction project: Crews are constructing a roundabout; installing highway lighting and landscaping; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and resurfacing the roadway. The intersection of SR 70 (15th Street E) and 9th Avenue E is closed during construction. Please use 13th Avenue E and 7th Avenue E as alternate routes during this time. A temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of SR 70 (15th Street E) and 13th Avenue E while the detour is in effect. Watson Civil Construction, Inc., is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.
SR 64 at Rye Road: Construction project: Crews are constructing a multi-lane roundabout; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage, and installing new highway lighting and landscaping. State Road 64 will be reduced to one lane in each direction through late December. The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph within the construction zone. IBT Construction is the contractor. Expected completion is late 2019.
SR 62 at SR 37: Maintenance contracts project: Crews are working on the roadway. Expect intermittent daytime lane closures with flaggers from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day Monday, December 17 and Tuesday, December 18. Use caution and expect possible delays.
OKEECHOBEE COUNTY
US 441 at SW 14 Street intersection: Maintenance contracts project: Crews will be performing asphalt repair on the southbound outside lane of the intersection at US 441 and SW 14 Street.
- Motorists should expect single daytime lane closures between December 17 through December 20 on the southbound outside lane at the intersection of US 441 and SW 14 Street.
NW 6th Street from US 98 to NW 12th Avenue: Construction project: Crews will improve drainage along NW 6th Street from US 98 to NW 12thAvenue. Additional improvements include constructing a new stormwater pond, constructing a closed storm drain system, and restoring existing roadway pavement, driveways and roadside slopes disturbed during construction. Lane closures on US 98, NW 6th Street and NW 18th Avenue will be required during construction. Please follow detour signs and watch for workers in the construction zone. Estimated project completion is early 2019. The contractor is Lynch Paving & Construction Company.
US 441 south from Park Street (SR 70) to SW 32nd Street: Maintenance permit project: Crews are repairing sidewalks on the southbound side of South Parrott Avenue. Watch for trucks entering and exiting the site.
US 441 from south of NE 304 Street to the Osceola County Line: Construction project: Crews are resurfacing the roadway at US 441between NE 304 Street and the Osceola County line. The contractor will also replace the drainage pipe at US 441 and NW 358 Boulevard, install signage and pavement markings and improve the road shoulders. Watch for crews and equipment working close to the road. Drivers should expect lane closures on US 441 throughout the project. Flaggers will direct motorists through the work zone in a single lane. Please observe posted speed limits and drive with caution in the construction zone. The contractor is Lynch Paving & Construction Company. Estimated completion is late spring 2019.
- Crews are milling, resurfacing, placing temporary striping and sodding starting at the Osceola county line and working south. Motorists should expect single lane closures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the southbound and northbound lanes of US 441 between the Osceola county line and south of 304 Street.
US 441 SE between canal 59 and SE 66th Avenue: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing a new pumping station including a new driveway connection to US 441 SE. Watch for workers close to the roadway with shoulder closures. Watch for trucks and equipment entering and leaving the roadway.
SR 70 from SW 78th Terrace to North Parrott Avenue/US 441 from SR 70 to Osceola County: Maintenance permit project: Utility work will be close to the roadway in urban areas but further away in rural areas. Please use caution in these areas and watch for crews working close to the roadway.
POLK COUNTY
Ewell Road from east of Irby Lane to Old Highway 37: Construction project: Expect daytime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic throughout the project as crews continue reconstructing driveway connections and begin widening and placing curb and gutter.
This project includes replacing the bridge over Poley Creek, adding traffic signals and turn lanes at both Lunn Road intersections, resurfacing and upgrading signal equipment at Old Highway 37, drainage improvements, and milling and resurfacing in various locations. The contractor is SEMA Construction. Expected completion is early 2019.
US 98 just north of Princeton Manor Lane: Maintenance permit project: Watch for northbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December while crews add a new turn lane and driveway.
US 98 near South Crystal Lake Drive: Maintenance permit project: Watch for nighttime/overnight southbound lane closures at the entrance to Grove Park Shopping Plaza from 7:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. through December while crews remove and replace curb and gutters.
US 27 at Hunt Brothers Road: Maintenance permit project: Watch for northbound daytime lane closures as crews construct a new turn lane, driveway and signal. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
US 27 at US 98: Maintenance permit project: Watch for southbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December as crews construct a new driveway. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
US 17/92 east of Old Lee Jackson Road: Maintenance permit project: Watch for daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in both directions as crews build new turn lanes and work in the median. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
US 17/92 from W Cummings Street to W Orange Street: Maintenance permit project: Watch for eastbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. as crews reconstruct curb and sidewalk. Use caution and watch for vehicles entering and leaving the roadway.
US 17 (3rd Street) and 1st Street at Avenue O SW: Maintenance permit project: Watch for nighttime/overnight lane closures from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., as crews take cores of the roadway. Use caution and be prepared to stop or merge.
US 17 from the Hardee County line to Bartow: Maintenance contracts project: Watch for slow moving vehicles and wet paint as crews refresh striping on the roadway. Use caution and do not cross freshly painted lines or pass between paint crew vehicles.
US 17 from Main Street to Clower Street in Bartow: Maintenance contracts project: Watch for workers close to the road and intermittent lane closures as crews’ repair sidewalk. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
US 17 from Bartow to Eagle Lake: Maintenance contracts project: Watch for workers close to the road and intermittent lane closures as crews desilt drainage pipes. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
SR 659 (North Combee Road) at Lakeland Hills Boulevard: Maintenance permit project: Watch for eastbound lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. through December, while crews add a new driveway and regrade the ditch. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
SR 544 (Havendale Boulevard) from US 92 in Auburndale to US 17 in Winter Haven: Maintenance contracts project: Watch for intermittent shoulder and lane closures with workers close to the road and trucks entering and leaving the roadway, as crews repair sidewalks, driveways and trip hazards. Use caution and be prepared to merge. The contractor is Evans Contracting Services.
SR 544 (Lucerne Park Road) from Conine Road to Avenue Y: Maintenance permit project: Watch for lane closures with flaggers directing traffic from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through December as crews make a new drainage connection and build a new right turn lane. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
SR 542 from 1st Street to Buckeye Loop Road: Construction project: Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures as crews install barrier wall and pedestrian detours. During the day, watch for workers close to the road and trucks entering and leaving the project while crews continue clearing the project and installing force main.
The westbound right turn lane from SR 542 to Buckeye Loop Road will remain closed during this phase of construction. Use caution and allow extra time in your schedule when traveling in the area.
Pedestrian detours are also in place throughout the project for pedestrian safety. Please use designated walkways to avoid construction.
This project includes widening and adding a center turn lane, sidewalk and bike lanes; upgrading existing signal equipment; placing two mid-block crosswalks; and installing new water and sewer lines. Watson Civil Construction, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2020.
SR 60 from Diesel Road to Hillsborough County Line: Construction project: Use caution and watch for daytime lane closures to complete punch list items and striping. This project includes resurfacing, drainage improvements, guardrail installation and median modifications. The Lane Construction Corporation is the contractor. Expected completion is fall 2018.
SR 37 south of SR 674: Maintenance permit project: SR 37 will be closed temporarily while crews move a drag line across the roadway, Monday, December 17. Motorists will be directed to use a temporary detour until a temporary path next to SR 37 is available. Use caution and follow detour signs.
SR 37 from CR 640 (Pinecrest Road) to CR 630: Construction project: Watch for daytime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic as crews stripe the new roadway. Use caution and be prepared to stop.
Work on this project requires grinding out the old roadway and placing new asphalt, reconstructing shoulders and modifying the signal at CR 640 (Pinecrest Road). Ajax Paving is the contractor. Estimated completion is early 2019.
SR 37 north of West Pipkin Road: Maintenance permit project: Watch for nighttime/overnight southbound lane closures from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. while crews add a new right turn lane at McDonalds through December.
SR 37 at Poppell Drive: Maintenance permit project: Watch for northbound nighttime/overnight lane closures as crews reconstruct curb and driveway through December. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
SR 37 from Oppitz Lane to Palencia Place: Maintenance permit project: Watch for nighttime/overnight southbound lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. as crews’ directional bore to install underground utilities. Use caution and be prepared to merge.
SARASOTA COUNTY
Laurel Road at the Legacy Trail Crossing: Construction project: Crews are constructing a pedestrian bridge along the Legacy Trail over Laurel Road. Please be aware of construction vehicles entering and leaving the construction zone. Both northbound and southbound trail traffic is now being detoured to the east along the signed detour route utilizing the Mission Valley Boulevard signal to cross Laurel Road. Please follow detour signs provided. Intermittent single lane closures at the bridge are possible from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays only. Denson Construction, Inc. is the contractor for the bridge. Expected completion is late 2018.
I-75 at the University Parkway Interchange (Exit 213): Construction project: Crews are installing landscaping and irrigation systems at the I-75 and University Parkway interchange. Lane closures on I-75, if needed, will occur between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Lane closures on University Parkway, if needed, will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Estimated completion is spring 2019. US 41 from SR 789 to Ritz Carlton Drive and sidewalk located along the north side of SR 789 from Sunset Drive to US 41: Maintenance permit project: The sidewalk will remain closed until construction of the development located at the corner of US 41 and SR 789 is complete. Pedestrians should follow the established detour.
US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are widening US 41 from Salford Boulevard to Sumter Boulevard to a six-lane highway; resurfacing the roadway; improving drainage; constructing sidewalk, and installing highway lighting. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 8:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. when crews are resurfacing the roadway. Expect periodic driveway closures along the northbound lanes while crews are installing drainage systems. Russell Engineering, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.
US 41 Roundabouts at 10th Street and 14th Street, Sarasota: Construction project: Crews continue work within the right-of-way, medians and driveways.
- Temporary single lane closures may occur between 9th Street and 15th Street from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. if nighttime activities are scheduled.
- Grading and new driveway installations on the east side of US 41 on 14th Street. Individual home owners impacted by these activities will be contacted to coordinate.
- Water line tie in and road base construction on 14th Street is expected in the next 2 weeks. There will be some impacts to The Reserve parking driveway and the house to the east, ingress and egress will always be maintained for the parking lot.
- Installation of roadway base and curb at the NW and the NE corner of 14th Street/Imperial Drive. Expect heavy equipment trucks and vibration from rollers. All activities in this area are expected during the daytime hours.
- Installation of roadway base is expected on the west side of US 41. Expect noise from heavy machinery, dust and dump trucks moving in and out of traffic.
- Installation of drainage structures and storm pipe at the southwest corner of 10th Street and US 41.
- Crews are expected to work installing waterline on 10th Street. Eastbound right turn lane will be closed until the end of the week (Dec 21st).
- New temporary entrance to the Municipal Auditorium is in place and open for traffic. Please exercise caution in the area and watch out for heavy equipment and workers in the area
- Drainage structure and pipe installation along the west side of US 41 at the SW corner of 10th Street. Expect heavy equipment and trucks moving in and out of the travel lanes and parking lot for the Municipal Auditorium. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area.
- Light pole base foundations and preparation for sidewalks and driveways and road base at the north-east corner of 14th Street and US 41 intersection. Expect heavy equipment, concrete and dump trucks and power tools. Pedestrian paths may also be rearranged to accommodate work in this area.
- West bound 10th Street will have restricted lanes on the east side of US 41, only 2 lanes will be available to make left turns, through traffic and right turns. Crews will be preparing to pave this area with asphalt. Motorists are urged to use caution in the area and expect heavy equipment and trucks moving in and out of this area.
- Centennial Park Boat Ramp driveway on 10th Street will be closed. Motorists can access the boat ramp via the US 41 entrance. Northbound left turn lane from US 41 into the boat ramp is available.
- Pedestrian paths have been reconfigured around the work zone, please use designated sidewalks and cross walks. No pedestrian access on the west side of US 41 beyond Centennial Park, pedestrians are advised to use the sidewalk on the east side of US 41. Impacts to pedestrian access south of the Centennial Park on the west side of US 41 is expected while the contractor is performing excavation in the area.
- Box culvert construction is ongoing. Expect noise from concrete saws and jack hammers. There will be pumps running 24/7 for dewatering in the area. This is an active construction zone and for safety purposes only authorized personnel are allowed inside the work zone.
- The traffic pattern will be limited to right turn in/out for 11th, 12th and 13th Street. Traveling southbound and northbound direction left turns are not permitted at 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th Streets. Motorists are advised to follow the posted signs.
- Temporary detour route in effect. Use Cocoanut Avenue as alternate route to access 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th Street. Motorists are advised to follow the posted detour route and seek an alternate route while traveling in this area.
- Activities are subject to change due to adverse weather conditions and other schedule unforeseen problems. Other lane closures not yet scheduled may occur which do not appear on this update.
Speed limit is reduced to 30 mph. Speeding fines are doubled in the construction area when workers are present.
Improvements being made as part of this project consist of reconstructing the signalized intersections and replacing them with roundabouts, enhancing connectivity, circulation and safety. US 41 will be widened between the two intersections and will include bike lanes as well as dedicated turn lanes, a 10-foot sidewalk along the west side, and a 6-foot sidewalk along the east side. Other improvements include raised islands for pedestrian refuge at the intersections of US 41 at 10th Street and 14th Street, pedestrian signals, LED street lights, landscaping, and City of Sarasota utility and underground drainage structure replacements. Expected completion is spring 2020. The contractor is IBT Construction LLC.
US 41 from Hospital Road to River Road: Maintenance permit project: Crews are constructing new turn-lanes, driveway connections, and working in the medians. Expect intermittent north and southbound daytime lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Friday, December 28. Use caution and expect possible delays.
US 41 from McIntosh Road to Beneva Road: Construction project: Crews are constructing sidewalk and bicycle lanes, improving drainage, reconstructing the US 41 southbound bridge over Catfish Creek south of Central Sarasota Parkway, installing highway lighting, upgrading signals, and installing new signing and pavement markings.
- TRAFFIC SWITCH – Southbound US 41 traffic is reduced to one lane and shifted into one of the northbound lanes while construction is underway on the southbound Catfish Creek Bridge. Northbound US 41 will also be reduced to one lane to accommodate southbound traffic. This traffic pattern will be in effect for approximately five (5) months. Use caution and plan additional travel time.
- Northbound nighttime/overnight lane closures may occur between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Southbound nighttime/overnight lane closures may occur between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 a.m.
- The speed limit is reduced to 45 mph within the construction zone.
Motorists should use caution and obey the posted speed limit. Expected completion is fall 2019. The contractor is Morrison-Cobalt JV.
US 41 from Tuscola Boulevard to Ortiz Boulevard: Construction project: Crews are constructing a multi-use path; installing bus pads and shelters; improving drainage; constructing/replacing sidewalk; installing guardrail and highway lighting, and installing new signing and pavement markings. Expect nighttime/overnight lane closures from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Daytime lane closures between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. are possible. Lane closures within 600 feet of signalized intersections are not permitted between 5:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Florida Safety Contractors, Inc. is the contractor. Expected completion is spring 2019.
SR 72 at Proctor Road: Construction project: This project is to install a temporary traffic signal. The project also includes pedestrian signals and crosswalk at Proctor Road. This week, crews will work on installing traffic signal wiring and curb work.
- Drivers should anticipate lane closures; however, lane closures will be prohibited during peak hours from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Variable message signs will be in place to alert drivers that work is underway. Drivers should use caution while traveling in the work zone. Estimated completion is early 2019. Ajax Paving Industries of Florida, LLC is the contractor.
