UT Honors Program Announces Spring 2019 Symposia Series

The University of Tampa’s Spring 2019 Honors Program symposia series kicks off on Monday, Jan. 28, with Noah Oakley, recipient of the Timothy M. Smith Inspiration Through Exploration Award. His presentation begins at noon in the Crescent Club on the ninth floor of the Vaughn Center.

Throughout the series, resident scholars and researchers at the University as well as guest speakers will present in their areas of specialization. Guest speakers in the series include Mario Chard, author of the award-winning Land of Fire; Jaime Harker, professor of English and the director of the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University of Mississippi; and Kareem Khubchandani, the Mellon Bridge Assistant Professor in the Department of Drama and Dance and the Program in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Tufts University.

All lectures are free, open to the public and held on the UT campus, 401 W. Kennedy Blvd. For a full schedule, see below:

  • Monday, Jan. 28: Timothy M. Smith Inspiration through Exploration Award, Noah Oakley ’19, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, Crescent Club, noon.
  • Thursday, Feb. 7: When Rap Spoke Straight to God by Erica Dawson, UT associate professor of English and writing and director of the UT MFA in Creative Writing program, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, March 6: Land of Fire: Poems from el Fin de Mundo, winner of the 2016 Dorset Prize from Tupelo Press, by Mario Chard, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, Trustees Board Room, 4 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 28: The Lesbian South by Jamie Harker, professor of English and the director of the Sarah Isom Center for Women and Gender Studies at the University of Mississippi, Vaughn Center, second floor, Reeves Theater, 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, April 18: “In Search of a Desi Drag Queen,” Kareem Khubchandani, Mellon Bridge Assistant Professor in the Department of Drama and Dance and the Program in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at Tufts University, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, Crescent Club, 8 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Feb. 12: The Southern Circuit Film Series: Don’t Get Trouble in Your Mind: The Carolina Chocolate Drops Story, Vaughn Center, second floor, Reeves Theater, 6 p.m.
  • Monday, March 4: The Power of Sports: Media and Spectacle in American Culture, Michael Serazio, Department of Communication at Boston College, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, Trustees Board Room, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 5: The Southern Circuit Film Series: Bathtubs Over Broadway, Falk Theatre, 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, March 19: Writers at the University: Swords in the Hands of Children by Jonathan Lerner, Scarfone/Hartley Gallery, 7 p.m.
  • Tuesday, April 9: Southern Circuit Film Series: This is Home, Vaughn Center, second floor, Reeves Theater, 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 1: Procreative Ethics, Elizabeth Brake, associate professor of philosophy at Arizona State University, Vaughn Center, ninth floor, Crescent Club, 4 p.m.
