University of Tampa students, faculty and staff will honor the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a day of service to the Tampa Bay community on Friday, Jan. 25.
“The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service allows incoming and continuing students to participate in a day of activism and service, instead of a day of rest,” said Liz Ho-Sing-Loy ’20, student coordinator for the PEACE Volunteer Center, which is organizing the event. “By participating in community service in the Tampa Bay area, we hope to do as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. did: educate and inspire people to care about current social issues affecting their communities.”
Ho-Sing-Loy said the PEACE Volunteer Center is excited to welcome students back to campus for the spring semester by introducing them to the community outside UT. Participants will volunteer their time and energy at two area nonprofits:
- Habitat for Humanity
3738 E. Hillsborough Ave., Tampa, FL
(813) 239-2242, x114
- Zaksee Bird Sanctuary
7647 Gardner Road, Tampa, FL 33625
(813) 468-6645
The event begins at 12:30 p.m. with registration in Reeves Theater located on the second floor of the Vaughn Center. Volunteers will then travel by van to a volunteer location.
