Statement from Senator José Javier Rodríguez on Potential Oil Drilling in the Everglades

Posted on February 7, 2019

In response to an appeals court’s ruling to allow oil drilling in the Everglades, overturning a decision by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to deny a company a permit for the practice, Senator José Javier Rodríguez issued the following statement:

“There is nothing more important to the continued success of Florida than ensuring our environment, and most importantly our drinking water, is protected for generations to come. This decision will put the health and well-being of our citizens at risk, harm wildlife in an environmentally sensitive area, and presents countless dangers to the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades. We should be listening to the experts in the Department of Environmental Protection who rightfully rejected this outrageous plan and I am looking at all legislative avenues to ensure that no future drilling occurs that puts Floridians at risk.”
