Morean Arts Center and Chihuly Collection Host Three Glass Art Exhibitions in Conjunction with Glass Art Society Conference

Posted on February 20, 2019

The Morean Arts Center (MAC) and Chihuly Collection will host three glass art exhibitions in conjunction with the 2019 Glass Art Society (GAS) Conference, Charting a Course: Visions in Glass, held March 28-30 throughout the city of St. Petersburg. All three shows will focus on various aspects of glass as an artistic medium. Visions in Glass: Works by Glass Art Society’s Members and Explorations in Glass: Works by Glass Art Society’s Students at the MAC will showcase the works of GAS members and students. Perspectives in Glass: A Science in Optics at the Chihuly Collection will feature the works of GAS conference presenters and is included with the purchase of a General Admission ticket to the Chihuly Collection. All exhibitions open Saturday, March 9. Opening reception for the MAC will be held during Second Saturday ArtWalk, Saturday, March 9, 5-9 p.m.

GAS members are a part of a worldwide community of glass artists from over 40 countries and are dedicated to the awareness and appreciation of glass art. Now in its 48th year, the annual GAS conference has set its sights on sunny Florida’s emerging Glass Coast—St. Petersburg, promising its members the latest in industry trends, education and more. Select artists from the illustrious group have been chosen to showcase their work in one of three exhibitions being held at the Morean Arts Center and Chihuly Collection.

The Morean Arts Center is proud to be a part of the conference and looks forward to shining an even brighter light on St. Petersburg as a glass arts destination. “We’re both honored and thrilled to participate in this event. We cannot wait to experience all the excitement and creative buzz that will fill the streets of downtown St. Petersburg”, says Andy Schlauch, Executive Director of the Chihuly Collection and Morean Glass Studio.

Visions in Glass: Works by Glass Art Society’s Members on view at the MAC, will present a unique global survey on the array of glass art being made today. Explorations in Glass: Works by Glass Art Society’s Students, also on view at the MAC, will showcase the works of emerging GAS students with disciplines in traditional methods as well as newer media, including 3D printing and video. Both shows will be on view March 9 – April 26, open daily and free to the public.

Perspectives in Glass: A Science in Optics on view at the Chihuly Collection March 9 – May 31, will feature the works of GAS conference presenters who are also demonstrating their craft at the Morean Glass Studio during the 2019 GAS Conference. Objects in this show will range from blown glass work, cast glass and even lit installation.

The 2019 GAS Conference will take place at select venues in downtown St. Petersburg, offering coldworking demos, hot glass demos, flameworking demos, lectures and panels, special events and more.
