Representative Sirois Files House Memorial Calling on U.S. Space Force & U.S. Space Command to Land in Florida

Posted on March 4, 2019

Representative Tyler Sirois (R- Cocoa) announced today the filing of House Memorial 1281, a memorial to the Congress of the United States urging the creation of the United States Space Force and the establishment of the Space Force and the United States Space Command in Florida. The memorial follows a recent White House proposal by President Donald Trump, and Governor Ron DeSantis’ call for the Space Force to be headquartered in Florida.

“Florida’s Space Coast is the clear choice in which to locate the newest military service branch that focuses on maintaining America’s dominance in space,” stated Representative Sirois, Chairman of the Florida Legislature’s Space Caucus. “We are the home to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, which together form the world’s most active spaceport. With the necessary infrastructure already in place, an experienced workforce and well-established partnerships with military and civil agencies, the Space Coast is ready to launch into this vital mission from day one.”

Representative Sirois recently joined Governor DeSantis during his visit to the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, where the governor reiterated the Space Coast’s viability as the prime location for the Space Force’s headquarters.

“It was an honor to host the governor in my district, and I am grateful for his leadership in ensuring that Florida remains at the top when it comes to supporting our nation’s national security priorities,” said Representative Sirois.

On February 19, 2019 President Trump signed Space Policy Directive-4, which sets the framework for the establishment of a sixth branch of the armed forces through the development of a legislative proposal to be considered by the United States Congress. The Space Force would be a part of the United States Air Force. Its Space Command headquarters would become Florida’s fourth military command, joining U.S. Central Command and U.S. Special Operations Command, both in Tampa, and U.S. Southern Command in Doral.

Upon approval by the Florida Legislature, copies of the memorial filed by Representative Sirois will be remitted to Members of Congress and President Trump, urging their support for the headquarters in Florida.

Representative Sirois was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2018 and represents House District 51, which includes part of Brevard County.
