Dignity Florida Delegation Press Conference at State Capitol

Posted on March 19, 2019

MEDIA ADVISORY

The Dignity Delegation will Convene at the Capitol
Ahead of the Dignity Bill’s Third and Final Senate Committee Stop

Dignity Florida, a coalition of partners from across the state of Florida that believe in dignity for women and girls who are incarcerated in detention facilities, will host a press conference at the State Capitol Rotunda on Wednesday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m. The press conference is part of a two-day effort convening with a delegation of formerly incarcerated women and supporters at the Capitol, a day after Dignity for Incarcerated Women Act’s (HB 49/SB 332) first committee stop in the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee.

“We are happy that the dignity bill has passed unanimously through the first two committees, which is an early indication of the bipartisan support surrounding this important legislation,” said Valencia Gunder, Dignity Florida Campaign Manager. “Dignity Florida is working hard to make sure that women are safe and protected while incarcerated and we are very proud that our legislators are standing up for DIGNITY for all.”

Menstruating women do not have a choice or control over their menstrual cycles and should not be required to pay for hygiene products to ensure their health and dignity. Currently, people who are incarcerated in correctional facilities are required to manage limited rations of menstrual and hygiene products, and are required to purchase additional supplies when necessary (at above market rate).

Ensuring that incarcerated people have uninhibited access to menstrual products ensures their health and dignity, and eliminates the economic and legal barriers to accessing necessary hygiene items.
