Lake County’s Groveland Senior Center Recognized as a PSC Helping Hand

Posted on March 25, 2019

Partnerships are important in accomplishing goals. This month, during National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), the Groveland Senior Center partnered with the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) to share important scam awareness and conservation information with its clientele. To thank them for helping the PSC reach its NCPW messaging, Groveland Senior Center in Lake County is being recognized as a PSC Helping Hand.

“Through this NCPW partnership, the PSC helped seniors at the Groveland Center with their utility questions, promoted the Lifeline Assistance telephone/broadband discount program, and provided scam awareness/protection tips,” said PSC Chairman Art Graham.  “We also thank the Center for helping their seniors better understand how the PSC can assist them year-round.”

Each quarter, the PSC highlights a partner agency or organization whose clients are eligible for the federal Lifeline program and/or need help reducing energy and water bills.  Through these PSC Helping Hand partnerships, the Commission shares vital information to help consumers stretch their resources to meet their monthly bills.

“During NCPW, we were fortunate to have the PSC help our clients and support the Center’s ongoing educational programs,” said Janice Adkins, Lead Volunteer. “Our seniors benefitted from information on Lifeline, energy and water conservation, and utility bill payment assistance, and they look forward to future PSC visits.”

The Groveland Senior Center was one of several locations the PSC visited in Lake and Polk Counties for NCPW this year. You can find all the PSC’s NCPW events, and look for more PSC Helping Hand outreach partner recognitions on the PSC’s homepage, floridapsc.com, under Hot Topics.

About James L Wyche Senior Center also known as the Groveland Senior Center
James Leroy Wyche was principal of Edgewood Elementary School, Groveland’s first black school, from 1949 until it closed in 1961. Most of that time, he taught students in fourth through sixth grades on one side of the bottom floor of the tiny wooden schoolhouse on Mills Street. After the school closed, Wyche continued teaching in other Lake County schools before retiring in 1985. To honor the longtime educator, the Lions Center for Senior Citizens was renamed the James L. Wyche Center on November 30, 2007.  The City of Groveland established this all day Senior Center to provide a safe and comfortable place for local seniors to gather, socialize, learn new things, and enjoy each other’s company. Open 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; Monday through Friday, the Groveland Senior Center is located at 142 mills Street in Groveland.  For more information, call 352-429-9513.
