The Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) urges Floridians to support Water Conservation Month by saving more water this April! Conserving water helps protect Florida’s water supply for future generations.
According to a recent Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) report, the state’s population is expected to grow 27 percent by 2035. It is estimated that Floridians will require an additional 1.1 billion gallons of water per day (bgd), growing from 6.4 bgd in 2015 to 7.5 bgd in 2035, a 17 percent increase. Conservation will help Florida have adequate sources of water to meet future demands and continue protecting our natural systems.
“We should all conserve water year-round, but it is particularly important during April, typically the height of Florida’s dry season,” said PSC Commissioner Donald J. Polmann. “Even using simple water conservation strategies can help cut your water usage and save money on your monthly bill.”
Walking the talk, Commissioner Polmann also participated in a “Water Walk” video to imagine how a day without water would affect a typical neighborhood. The PSC video helped raise awareness about water as a precious resource in concert with the annual “Imagine a Day Without Water,” a national Value of Water Campaign.
Commissioner Polmann invites Floridians to elevate their conservation efforts this April by becoming more aware of the need to save water and implementing these simple water saving measures:
Outdoors
• Follow local water restrictions and irrigate lawns only when needed.
• Follow Right-Plant, Right-Place guidelines and select plants from the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Plant List.
• Use a hose nozzle to prevent water waste.
• Use a rain barrel to store rainwater for watering your yard or plants.
Indoors
• Replace old showerheads with new low-flow models that work just as well using less water.
• Run your washing machine and dishwasher only when full.
• Fix water leaks and drippy faucets.
The Florida DEP and many local governments participate in statewide water conservation efforts through the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association’s Water Use Efficiency Division (WUED). The WUED works with the Governor and Cabinet each year to officially proclaim April as Water Conservation Month.
