FAMU To Host Family Heirs’ Property Town Hall Meeting

Posted on April 18, 2019

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Agriculture and Food Sciences Cooperative Extension Program will host a Family Heir’s Property Town Hall Meeting 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

The purpose of this event is to bring awareness to the community and hear from Florida residents impacted by family heirs’ property and partner with them to develop a strategic plan of action to address their needs and concerns. Family heirs’ property refers to land that has been passed down informally in a family from generation to generation, usually without legal documentation or being included in a will.

“In 1910, African Americans owned 15 million acres of land; 80 percent of the 15 million has been lost as a result of family heirs’ property,” Sandra Thompson, Ed.D., the event organizer said. “Family heirs’ property, though it has some benefits, overall in the 21st Century it is incompatible with capitalism, therefore it hinders wealth building and generational transfer of wealth.”

The event will take place on the FAMU campus in the Perry Paige Auditorium, 1740 S. Martin Luther King, Jr., Blvd, Tallahassee, Fla., 32307.

The event is open to the public. FHP owners, stakeholders, county, city, state, federal officials and staff, and the general public and the local community are encouraged to attend.

Free parking is available on campus and in the gravel parking lot, located on Osceola Street. For more information, contact Thompson, at 850-599-3546 or at [email protected].
