Help Fight the Opioid Crisis by Participating in Drug Take-Back Day

Posted on April 26, 2019

Attorney General Ashley Moody is asking Floridians to help fight the opioid crisis by participating in the 17th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The biannual event is a safe and responsible way to properly dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs or controlled substances. Disposing of unwanted or expired pharmaceuticals can help prevent drug abuse, addiction and overdose deaths. Drug Take-Back Day will take place this Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at locations across Florida.

Attorney General Ashley Moody said, “I am encouraging Floridians to join us in our fight to end the opioid crisis by participating in Drug Take-Back Day. The event gives people the opportunity to dispose of expired and unused medications in a safe, responsible manner. Additionally, it helps keep opioid-based painkillers and other prescription drugs out of the wrong hands, helping prevent addiction and overdose deaths.”

The Drug Enforcement Administration coordinates Drug Take-Back Days in conjunction with state and local law enforcement. Floridians can learn more about National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day and find participating locations by visiting TakeBackDay.dea.gov.

Since the fall of 2010, the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA is 10,878,950 pounds. During the last Drug Take-Back Day in October, citizens disposed of more than 900,000 pounds of unused or expired prescription medication—27,121 pounds in Florida.
