FAMU Summer Youth Theatre Presents New Play at Charles Winter Wood

Posted on July 5, 2019

FAMU Essential Theatre’s Irene C. Edmonds Youth Theatre campers are heating things up New Orleans style. Culminating a five-week theatre camp, 33 young actors will present “The House of Jean-Rene,” at the Charles Winter Wood Theatre July 11-13.

This multi-narrative drama, written and directed by the youth theatre’s co-director, James Webb, uncovers the mystery lurking beneath a New Orleans estate.

Webb’s original drama profiles a contemporary Seattle family who rents a house in the French Quarter. Once owned by Le Gems de Couleur, free people of color, the house is rumored to be haunted by members of the 19th century family who experienced great tragedy in 1803 on the eve of the Louisiana Purchase.

The lives of both families intertwine as the temporary occupants question whether the teenage son actually sees the resident ghosts. Complete with a New Orleans style second line tradition, “The House of Jean-Rene” ghastly explores how one act of envy ripples across centuries.
