Marking ten years of Wisdom in Senior Education
The Daytona State College Foundation’s Wisdom in Senior Education (WISE) program marks its ten-year anniversary with an array of speakers beginning in September.
The initial WISE presentation will be at the College’s Daytona Beach Campus on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with subsequent presentations at DSC’s Advanced Technology College (ATC), 1770 Technology Blvd., Daytona Beach (located ½-mile north of LPGA Blvd. off Williamson Blvd.) – all presentations are from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The schedule continues throughout the fall as follows. Note: Speakers, dates and times are subject to change.

EXHIBIT
Featuring the solo exhibition of DSC alum Clarissa Bonet as well as the exhibition “This is Climate Change” in the upstairs gallery. Clarissa Bonet’s exhibition presents two bodies of work, “Stray Light” and “City Space,” which focus on her interaction with the urban environment. “This is Climate Change” is a fine-art landscape photography exhibit that does not seek to showcase the effects of climate change, but instead shows how the effects of climate change are no longer concealable when photographing the environment. Refreshments will follow.

NASA CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF APOLLO 11
Greg Clements, Chief, Strategic Implementation Office, NASA Kennedy Space Center. One of the most significant technical achievements of the 20th Century was the Apollo 11 moon landing, which occurred on July 20, 1969. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of that historic event, this program will take us back to 1969 to relive the excitement, as well as show some of the current and future plans for NASA exploration, including the recently announced “Moon2Mars” initiative.

MEET DOLLEY MADISON PORTRAYED BY NANCY SCHLEICHER
Ms. Schleicher will give a historical portrayal of Dolley Madison, who set the standard for first ladies with her tact and social graces. Dolley Madison is credited with saving the portrait of George Washington when the British set fire to the White House during the War of 1812.

MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Attorney Aaron Delgado, Daytona Beach. America currently has a patchwork of local, state, and federal laws that treat the same drug differently and inconsistently depending on its form and mode of use. Florida voters recently passed a constitutional amendment permitting some limited medical use of marijuana, although under federal law it still remains classified as a Schedule 1 drug that is criminalized as having no accepted medical treatment use in the U.S. Attorney Aaron Delgado describes some of the current issues concerning interactions between differing state and federal drug laws, and that the new amendment has not decriminalized recreational use of marijuana.

VEDIC MATH
For more than 30 years, Richard Blum has studied and researched Vedic Math, which is an ancient system of mathematics from India that was discovered 110 years ago. Vedic Math not only greatly increases one’s ability to do mathematical calculations, but also, enhances mental agility, increases self-confidence and elevates self-esteem.

Prof. Eric Breitenbach, Daytona State College. A documentary profiling six individuals who continue the work of William Bartram, the 18th century naturalist who catalogued the South’s flora and fauna prior to the American Revolution.

D-DAY REMEMBERED
Dr. Nancy Duke, Daytona State College. 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy in WWII. Code named Operation Overlord, D-Day began on June 6, 1944 when more than 160,000 allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy France. It launched the most successful invasion of German occupied Western Europe and it was the most successful seaborne invasion in history.

FLORIDA: THE FIRE IN THE SKY
James “Zach” Zacharias, Museum of Arts and Sciences. Hear the history that few know anything about, Florida’s historic urban fires. Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Ocala, DeLand and other major cities endured epic fires that destroyed swaths of their original downtown areas. These fires left death and destruction in their wake before modern firefighting could save their towns. Learn about the aftermath of these fires and their long-term effects.

DYNAMIC TRANSFORMATION FOR DAYTONA BEACH
Hardy Smith, Government Relations Administrator, City of Daytona Beach. Daytona Beach is undergoing an amazing transformation. The city is benefiting from unprecedented investment which is creating a dramatic, positive change for the local economy. This presentation will provide an update on development activities underway and what future announcements might be forthcoming.
The Foundation created the WISE program to provide continuing education and cultural enrichment activities to senior members of the community. WISE is open to anyone age 50 or older; $15 for an individual or $25 per couple for the period September-December.
