Drivers are advised that Canal Street west of U.S. 1 will be closed to through traffic nightly from 10 p.m. – 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 16, through Monday, Sept. 30. The closure is necessary to install new storm drains across Canal Street.

During the closure, electronic message boards and other signage will be used to direct traffic using the following detour routes:

  • Drivers traveling west on Canal Street will need to turn right onto U.S. 1, turn left onto Washington Street, turn left onto North Myrtle Avenue, and turn left onto Canal Street.
  • Drivers traveling east on Canal Street will need to turn left onto North Myrtle Avenue, turn right onto Washington Street, turn right onto U.S. 1, and turn left onto Canal Street.

Please see the detour map provided.

The work is part of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project to improve the intersection at Canal Street and U.S. 1 to include milling and resurfacing, widening, curb and gutter, drainage improvements, sidewalk, signalization, lighting, and utility work.

Please note that construction schedules may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Updates are available on the project web page on cflroads.com/project/240992-5.

Media inquiries should be directed to the FDOT Communications Office at 386-943-5479 or [email protected].

FDOT urges all drivers to stay alert and use caution while driving through or near construction zones. When driving, walking, or bicycling, remember to pay attention and follow the rules. Safety doesn’t happen by accident.
