Senator Linda Stewart’s Resolution Defining the Threats of Climate Change Passes First Committee

Posted on January 29, 2020

Senator Linda Stewart’s (D-Orlando) resolution recognizing the imminent threats presented by climate change unanimously passed its first committee stop Monday in Infrastructure and Security. The resolution acknowledges the unique concerns facing Florida and indicates the legislature’s commitment to develop policies to proactively address those concerns.

“We recognize that climate change is a pressing issue in our state and I appreciate that Senator Lee and the Infrastructure and Security committee have taken a leadership role on this issue. Since the unanimous vote on Monday, it is promising that this we will continue to pursue solutions to the threats faced by the state of Florida,” said Stewart.

CS/SR 1572 was amended to encompass the committee’s previous work to address statewide infrastructure resiliency and provide adequate electric vehicle charging stations. This resolution outlines some of the threats posed to the state by climate change, such as rising sea levels, fresh water contamination, severe storm events, and changes to agriculture.

“I believe this resolution will bring awareness to Florida’s needs. It is time that the Florida Senate acknowledges climate change and its threats to our environmental and economic security,” said Stewart.
