Drivers Required to Put Phones Down in Construction and School Zones
Texting and driving can not only hurt you and your passengers, but it also puts everyone on the road in danger. To reduce distracted driving and increase safety, Florida’s new state law makes texting while driving a primary offense and prohibits drivers from holding cellphones in work and school zones.
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), along with its partners at the Florida Highway Patrol, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and Seminole County Public Schools are reminding motorists to focus on the road while driving, especially in the area of E.E. Williamson Road where there are adjoining school and construction work zones. As an alternative, hands-free devices may be used. On E.E. Williamson Road in Seminole County, drivers pas through a school zone for Woodlands Elementary School and a construction zone for the reconstruction of the E.E. Williamson Road bridge over Interstate 4 (I-4). During its complete reconstruction, the bridge will remain open to trucks, cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians. When traveling through this work zone and the school zone, drivers must put phones or other handheld wireless devices down.
