FDOT Partners with Seminole County Agencies to Remind Drivers About New Cell Phone Law

Posted on February 11, 2020

Drivers Required to Put Phones Down in Construction and School Zones

Texting and driving can not only hurt you and your passengers, but it also puts everyone on the road in danger. To reduce distracted driving and increase safety, Florida’s new state law makes texting while driving a primary offense and prohibits drivers from holding cellphones in work and school zones.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), along with its partners at the Florida Highway Patrol, the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office, and Seminole County Public Schools are reminding motorists to focus on the road while driving, especially in the area of E.E. Williamson Road where there are adjoining school and construction work zones. As an alternative, hands-free devices may be used. For additional information about the Wireless Communications While Driving Law, please visit flhsmv.gov/focusondriving.

On E.E. Williamson Road in Seminole County, drivers pas through a school zone for Woodlands Elementary School and a construction zone for the reconstruction of the E.E. Williamson Road bridge over Interstate 4 (I-4). During its complete reconstruction, the bridge will remain open to trucks, cars, bicyclists, and pedestrians. When traveling through this work zone and the school zone, drivers must put phones or other handheld wireless devices down.

For more information about I-4 Beyond the Ultimate improvements in Seminole County, including the reconstruction of the E.E. Williamson Road bridge over I-4, please visit I4Beyond.com/Seminole. To be notified of nighttime lane closures, please visit I4Beyond.com/Alerts to sign up for email or text construction alerts.

For media inquiries, please contact the FDOT Communications Office at 386-943-5593 or [email protected].
