In response to disingenuous attacks by his opponent for Senate District 39, Representative Javier Fernandez releases the following statement:
“As I have continually said, the comments by Bernie Sanders are foolish, reckless, and wildly insensitive. They are offensive to me, my family, and to every Cuban-American, including thousands who faced repression, imprisonment, and the loss of loved ones at the hands of the cruel and dictatorial Castro regime.
“As Americans, we must stand against all authoritarian governments, as well as any attempt to excuse their cruelty, whether it comes from a Senator in Vermont or in the form of Donald Trump heaping praise on the most brutal, sadistic, and murderous dictators on the planet. I will always hold anyone accountable for their actions, regardless of their party, who willfully supports tyrants. Unfortunately, we are still waiting for Representative Rodriguez to do the same.”
Representative Javier Fernandez is a Democrat and a native of Miami-Dade. The son of a Miami-Dade public school teacher, Javier played football for Christopher Columbus High School, attended college on a full academic scholarship, and ultimately earned a law degree from the University of Miami. After college, he served as an advocate for non-profit organizations and as the Chief of Staff for former Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, before going on to work as a real estate attorney in the private sector. As a State Representative, Javier has fought for better funding for our public schools, improving public transit in Miami-Dade, and commonsense gun safety reform. Javier and his wife, Dr. Anna Maria Patiño-Fernández, a clinical psychologist, have been married for 15 years. They have two children — Susanna (11) and Lucas (9).
