The Army Will Hold a Virtual Spring Ceremony for UT Students May 8

Posted on May 7, 2020

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the U.S. Army will conduct its annual spring ceremony to commission its second lieutenants at The University of Tampa via a virtual ceremony on Friday, May 8, at 10 a.m. The ceremony will not be streamed, but it will be recorded. There will also be a supplemental national ceremony where several cadets across the United States Army Cadet Command will be honored.

For the local ceremony, UT will be honoring these cadets as they commission to second lieutenants.

  • George Bradley, a criminology and criminal justice major commissioning into the military intelligence branch with a branch detail to infantry
  • Ryan DePietro, a distinguished military graduate and history major commissioning into the infantry
  • Peter Makrides, a business management major commissioning into the military intelligence branch with a branch detail to infantry
  • Chris Martinez, a history major commissioning into the signal corps with a branch detail to infantry

Brig. Gen. Gregory Anderson (the deputy director of strategy, plans and policy at Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base) will be the guest speaker and issue the oath of office. There will be no formal “first salute,” which is normally a tradition in which the newly commissioned officer receives a ceremonial first salute from a non-commissioned officer or other enlisted soldier.

  • Lekesha Allen, a criminology and criminal justice major commissioning into the quartermaster corps
  • Brendan Aretz, a psychology major commissioning into the infantry

  • William Campos, an entrepreneurship major commissioning into military intelligence with a branch detail to infantry
  • Fred Elvington, a distinguished military graduate and political science and cybersecurity major commissioning into military intelligence with a branch detail to infantry
  • Charles Futch, a sociology major commissioning into the signal corps
  • Ryan Johnson, a finance major commissioning into the signal corps with a branch detail to infantry
  • Karlee Roca, a marketing major commissioning into the engineers
  • Erika Roy, a distinguished military graduate and psychology major commissioning into the signal corps

  • Grant Smith, an economics major commissioning into the signal corps with a branch detail to infantry
  • Johanna Tenezaca, an international relations and Spanish double major commissioning into the signal corps
