Senate Democratic Leader Audrey Gibson (D-Jacksonville) on Thursday applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision rebuffing the Trump administration’s attempts to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA program. She issues the following statement:
“I applaud the Court for rejecting this assault on DACA, and the hundreds of thousands of young immigrants it embraces.
“Children who were brought to our shores by parents seeking a better life committed no crime, and broke no laws, yet were made pawns of a political agenda seeking to demonize immigrants in its quest for power. Not even a conservative-leaning court was willing to go along with this charade.
“This ruling is especially welcome in Florida, where more than 25,000 DACA recipients, or Dreamers, are an integral part of our communities, and contribute millions in state and local taxes. They have attended the same schools, earned their places at colleges and universities, established businesses and careers, pledged allegiance to the same flag, and served in the military, despite the threat of deportation wielded by the Trump Administration and like-minded cohorts.
“I hope this ruling serves as a wake up call to all those in Tallahassee who remain intent on victimizing DACA kids, their families, and immigrants in general, through legislation or in the courts.”
