Everglades Trust endorses Congressman Brian Mast

Posted on July 14, 2020

The Everglades and coastal estuaries need leaders,
generational superstars, not bench warmers

Everglades Trust Executive Director Kimberly Mitchell issued the following statement regarding the endorsement of Congressman Brian Mast for reelection:

In the race for Florida’s 18th Congressional District, voters not only have a clear choice, they have a rarity in Florida politics – an elected official who calls a spade a spade, stands up to Big Sugar, fights every day to put an end to the toxic discharges devastating the Treasure Coast and Southwest Florida for decades and restore the flow of clean freshwater to America’s Everglades.

For as long as Florida’s waterways have been under attack by the sugar industry and their special interest allies, most politicians have cowered in fear, lacking the spine to stand up for what is right.

Even after being blown up by terrorists in Afghanistan, that’s never been a problem for Congressman Brian Mast. He does with two prosthetic legs what 100 men and women before him could not or would not do: make significant progress pushing an enormous boulder uphill.

Without a doubt, spanning this decades-long fight, Congressman Mast has been the strongest champion to stop toxic discharges and restore the Everglades we have ever seen or worked with. He’s led the fight to authorize the EAA southern storage reservoir, secured hundreds of millions of dollars to restore the Everglades, forced the Army Corps of Engineers to fix their management of Lake Okeechobee and voted to end big sugar’s corrupt soviet-style subsidies.

The election of Governor Ron DeSantis in 2018, in large part because of his very public and unwavering commitment to finally solving this problem, must be the new standard for any Republican or Democrat who wishes to serve their community on the local, state or federal levels.

Everglades Trust is proud to stand alongside Congressman Brian Mast in the fight for Florida’s waterways and America’s Everglades. He has our strongest and unequivocal endorsement.
