In response to his victory in the State Senate District 39 primary, Representative Javier Fernandez issues the following statement:
“As the son of a school teacher who raised four children on her own, I saw every day what true sacrifice looks like. I also saw how our community rallied together in times of need and I vowed to do all I could to give back to a country that had given us so much. Tonight is another step forward on that journey.
“Once elected this fall, I will continue to work across the aisle to find solutions to the issues affecting working families and small business owners in South Florida. We must fully fund our public schools, help those still recovering from the pandemic, work to spur economic recovery, and solve the problems of affordable housing and sea level rise affecting our communities. Our country is one of unlimited opportunity and working together we can ensure that every South Floridian has the equal opportunity to realize their dreams.”
Representative Javier Fernández is a Democrat and proud son of a single-mother and retired Miami-Dade County school teacher. Raised in Senate District 39 with his three siblings, Javier graduated from Christopher Columbus High School and went onto college with a full academic scholarship, ultimately earning his law degree. After graduation, Javier began his career advocating to expand the supply of affordable housing and improve some of our most neglected communities. He then had the honor of serving as the chief of staff to former Miami mayor Manny Diaz, before spending the last decade in the private sector as a practicing real estate lawyer. As a State Representative, Javier has fought for common-sense gun reform, full funding for our public schools, and improved public transit in Miami-Dade County. Javier and his wife, Dr. Anna Maria Patino-Fernandez, a clinical child psychologist, have been married for 15 years. They have two children – Susanna (11) and Lucas (9).
