UT is Again Highlighted By U.S. News for Value, Innovation, Social Mobility and More

Posted on September 14, 2020

The University of Tampa is again ranked by U.S. News & World Report in the top tier in the category Best Regional Universities (South) in its Best Colleges 2021 guidebook.

The Sykes College of Business was also named as a top undergraduate business program, which is based solely on the judgments of deans and senior faculty members at peer institutions.

UT was named in six lists for regional universities, including: 1) Best Value Schools; 2) Most Innovative Colleges; 3) A+ Schools for B Students; 4) Top Performers on Social Mobility; 5) Best Colleges for Veterans; 6) Best Undergraduate Teaching.

For the “Best Value Schools,” rankings were based on three variables: 1) ratio of quality to price; 2) percentage of all undergraduates receiving need-based grants; 3) average discount; and 4) the percentage of aid that a student doesn’t have to pay back.

Regarding the list “Most Innovative Colleges,” these are colleges and universities that were named by college presidents, provosts and admissions deans that are making the most innovative improvements in terms of curriculum, faculty, students, campus life, technology or facilities.

In the “A-plus Schools for B Students” list, schools were ranked on six variables, including the school’s performance in the Best Colleges 2021 ranking, the average first-year student retention rate and admittance of a meaningful proportion of students who didn’t get straight A’s.

Schools named as “Top Performers on Social Mobility” are ones that serve low-income students, and are successful in graduating students who received federal Pell Grants.

The “Best Colleges for Veterans” list names schools that offer benefits that can make pursuing a college education more affordable for veterans. These include schools being certified for the GI Bill and schools that participate in the Yellow Ribbon program. UT boasts a generous transfer credit policy for military students, offers up to 100% tuition/fees for veterans eligible for the Post 9/11 GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon program and has a VA-certifying official on site. UT has also regularly been named a military-friendly university by Victory Media and Military Advanced Education.

Finally, the Best Undergraduate Teaching ranking focuses on schools where faculty and administrators are committed to teaching undergraduate students in a high-quality manner. College presidents, provosts and admissions deans nominated schools for this ranking.

The print edition of the Best Colleges 2021 guidebook can be pre-ordered or purchased at Amazon, Barnes & Noble and will ship in early October. It will be available in stores on Oct. 27.
