All ramps at Kirkman Road interchange in final configuration
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is opening a new entrance ramp to Interstate 4 (I-4) at the Kirkman Road interchange as soon as the morning of Wednesday, September 30.
Among the I-4 Ultimate project’s most significant safety improvements is the elimination of left-hand exits that were part of the interstate’s original design. Drivers now use right-hand exits to access Kirkman Road, which reduce lane weaving on I-4 and meet motorists’ expectations.
The reconfigured Kirkman Road interchange is just one of the significant enhancements to mobility and safety for those traveling throughout the attractions area. Eastbound I-4 was realigned and straightened under Kirkman Road while extended Universal Boulevard and Kirkman Road interchange ramps create additional space for drivers to enter the interstate at highway speed, improving traffic flow.
The Grand National Overpass opened to traffic summer 2017. The overpass accommodates motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians further improving connections between attractions, hotels, shopping, restaurants and more. Expected to open in 2021, Grand National Overpass managed lane exit and entrance ramps will provide even more travel options in this busy area.
A new pedestrian bridge over Kirkman Road, located just north of the Major Boulevard intersection, is in the final stages of construction. The bridge will allow for safer passage of pedestrians and cyclists from the attractions on the west side to hotels and businesses on the east side. This enhancement also benefits motorists by eliminating time spent at the intersection waiting for pedestrians to cross the road.
