The Halifax Heritage Byway Is Added to the
Collection of the Florida Scenic Highways Program
The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) announced the addition of the Halifax Heritage Byway to its collection of designated scenic highways. The Florida Scenic Highways Program recognizes the best of the best in roads and the communities that they connect throughout the state.
From Ormond Beach to Wilbur-by-the-Sea, travelers going through the Halifax Heritage Byway will pass through Volusia County’s beach towns. This scenic highway will help support Volusia County’s local communities and businesses and promote tourism in the area.
“The Halifax Heritage Byway is a route that visitors can get excited about and residents can be proud of,” said the Florida Department of Transportation’s District Five Secretary Jared W. Perdue. “This byway falls right in line with what the State’s Scenic Highway Program is all about and deserves the official designation as it showcases the scenic drive through Volusia County’s coastal beach towns.”
The Halifax Heritage Byway focuses on the nearly 300 years of history and heritage found along the Halifax River region of Florida. Its 35 miles of state and local roads carries visitors through areas that once were home to some of central Florida’s earliest pioneer settlements, 1920s boom-time era developments and beachside areas known as vacation magnets.
On September 1, 2020, the Byway Organization presented their Byway Management Plan to the Scenic Highway Program Advisory Committee, composed of state and federal agency representatives, for concurrence. Submittal of this management plan was the culmination of a years-long effort to document the region’s story, resources, and community passion. The recommendation from this advisory committee has resulted in the Byway Organization’s receipt of an acceptance letter from FDOT’s Secretary Kevin J. Thibault P.E. for inclusion in this highly regarded collection of off-the-beaten-path roads.
Halifax Heritage Byway now becomes the 27th scenic highway in Florida, and its length adds to the nearly 1,600 miles of designated roads that carry the title of Florida Scenic Highway. For more information on the Florida Scenic Highway Program go to www.floridascenichighways.com.
