FAMU MMERI To Host Conversations on Cannabis Virtual Forum

Posted on October 23, 2020

Florida A&M University (FAMU) Medical Marijuana Education and Research Initiative (MMERI) will host Conversations on Cannabis – What’s New in Florida – Virtual Forum on Monday, October 26 at 7 p.m.

The Conversations on Cannabis Virtual Forum is designed to educate, learn and talk with Floridians about the basics of medical marijuana and the unlawful use of marijuana.

The third episode of the forum, What’s New in Florida?, will be streamed live on Zoom and Facebook, beginning at 7 p.m. with introduction of the panel, featuring Bhavin Patel, MD, and Jenifer Perdomo, community educator for Trulieve, and a cancer survivor.

Many Florida residents have questions about the use of medical marijuana and the implications of illegal marijuana use.

Among the topics covered during the forum will be about cancer and medical marijuana. Patel will speak about the topic from a physician’s perspective and Perdomo will come from a survivor standpoint.

“We know from the research that cancer is the second-leading cause of deaths across the world,” said MMERI Director Patricia Green-Powell, Ph.D. “With that in mind, it is the intent of the Conversations on Cannabis virtual forum, to educate and raise awareness among interested individuals and groups and inspire them to learn about the impact of medical cannabis use for certain qualifying conditions, including cancer; and talk with others about medical cannabis.”

Patel, chief practice management officer of Healthy Option Consulting, is a microbiologist who graduated from  the University of Florida. He has  experience as a COO for three primary care walk-in clinics that sub-specialize in medical cannabis consultations and anti-addiction services. That gives him the  ability to assess existing practice workflow and documentation protocols and maximize the office efficiencies of medical cannabis practices.
