FAMU To Host More Than 120 Companies In Virtual Career and Internship Expo

Posted on January 15, 2021

By Jonathan Edouard

The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Career and Professional Development Center Virtual Career and Internship Expo Day is expected to attract recruiters from more than 120 companies.

The event will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, through Handshake. Students – freshmen, sophomores, juniors, seniors, and graduate students – as well as FAMU alumni can sign up to meet with employers individually for 10 minutes or 30-minute group sessions. Those attending the Expo are encouraged to complete their schedules and take advantage of both group and individual sessions.

Among the participating companies are Miller Electric Company, Enterprise Holdings, Spin Systems, Inc., Walmart, CVS Health, Capital One, Cardinal Health, Verizon, and Verizon Media. A number of school districts and government agencies are also planning to recruit at the event, said Assistant Director of the Career and Professional Development Center Marie Smallwood,  a co-coordinator of the Expo.

“It is important for students to attend the Career and Internship Expo because this opportunity gives access to employers specifically looking to hire FAMU students,” Smallwood said.

Through Handshake, students can access the list of all the companies registered to recruit at the Expo. Students can also filter the list of recruiters for their major. FAMU alumni who want to participate will need to create a Handshake account before the Expo.

The Career and Professional Development Center will be assisting students in preparing for the Expo by providing resume review, interview preparation, and Handshake profile review workshops, Smallwood said.

In anticipation of the Expo, JCPenney will sponsor the Suit-Up and is provide students with a 30 percent discount off business apparel and the chance to win a $100 store gift card. To qualify for the gift card giveaway, students must register on Handshake by 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15.

Handshake Workshops:
Handshake review, 11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19
Resume review, 8 a.m. to noon, Wednesday, Jan. 20
Interview preparation, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21
