Senator Victor Torres Condemns Refusal of Florida Congressional Republicans to Honor U.S. Capitol Police Heroes

Posted on June 17, 2021

Appalled by the refusal of two Florida Congressional Republicans to join an effort to award the Congressional Gold Medal for Bravery to U.S. Capitol Police who defended members of Congress during the January 6th insurrection, state Senator Victor Torres (Democrat-Kissimmee) issued the following statement:

“Twenty-one Congressional Republicans voted against the House Resolution, a blatant rejection of the patriots who fought in hand-to-hand combat to protect the Capitol, and the lives of those who work there. It is extremely disappointing to realize that Congressman Matt Gaetz and Congressman Greg Steube of Florida are among those who have voted against this bill.”

“Many of these Republicans have claimed that they back the police. Yet, when given this chance to show it, they fell short. There is no excuse to reject the valor and patriotism of these officers. Those heroes should be honored for their bravery.”
