Statement from Senator Lauren Book on DeSantis Signing SB 1532: Child Support into Law

Posted on June 17, 2021

“At a time when so many Floridians are forced to pick and choose what they can afford on a daily basis, this bill – now Florida law – ensures that contract and gig workers are paying their fair share of child support and that individuals who are incarcerated for crimes against their child or co-parent are classified as willfully unemployed to ensure they’re not off the hook for payment.”

The bill also contains provisions to ensure divorcing parents of a child with special needs receive special information and resources to support their child; on this provision, Senator Book comments:

“When parents get a divorce, it is a hard thing for any child to go through – let alone a child with special needs. This legislation will help make sure parents have the information and resources they need to support their special needs children through the changes their family is going through so that everyone can come out stronger on the other side.”
