Senator Lauren Book, re: DeSantis Signature of SB 1786/Florida Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Plan (NICA)

Posted on June 22, 2021

“Most families learn about the Florida Birth Related Neurological Injury Compensation Association (NICA) during the hardest moments of their lives, after their newborn has suffered catastrophic brain damage during birth. Until today, the program has fallen unacceptably short of the promise to ensure families are provided with the resources they need to care for their brain-injured child for the rest of his or her life. Getting this legislation to the finish line has been one of the most worthwhile battles I’ve ever had the privilege to fight. With the passage of this law, NICA’s obligation will be, first and foremost, to those Florida families.”
