One in three Floridians say they are now experiencing more social anxiety than they did prior to the isolation imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a recent survey conducted as society begins reopening.
The survey into mental health status, conducted for the Florida Association of Managing Entities, found significant differences among various demographic groups. For example, younger Floridians report noticeably higher levels of social anxiety than do older Floridians – 41% among those ages 35-54 and 37% among those ages 18-34, compared with just 25% of those age 55 and older. A greater share of women (38%) than men (30%) say they have experienced greater feelings of anxiety as society reopens.
“With people getting vaccinated and transitioning from the pandemic’s more isolated lifestyle to greater social settings, it’s concerning that one-third of us are experiencing higher levels of social anxiety,” said Natalie Kelly, CEO of the Florida Association of Managing Entities. “Floridians seeking behavioral health assistance should contact local providers or call 2-1-1 to be directed to the available resources in their communities.”
Florida’s seven local Managing Entities work with a network of over 300 behavioral health care providers who deliver services to over 300,000 of Florida’s most vulnerable residents, including children, expectant mothers, veterans, and the chronically homeless.
Providers meet patients’ diverse needs with “wraparound services” that not only address mental health issues and substance abuse, but also assist with housing, transportation, and employment. Managing Entity community boards administer, manage, and ensure accountability of state and federal funds for behavioral health services, keeping oversight and accountability closest to the people they serve.
The survey of 650 registered Florida voters was conducted June 19-21. It carries a margin of error of 3.8%.
