MEDIA ADVISORY
On Tuesday, August 3, 2021, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) District Five will be joined by Alert Today Florida, the National Coalition for Safer Roads, and the Space Coast TPO to host a Stop on Red Event to help educate road users about how to safely approach intersections, obey traffic signals, and share the road with others.
This National Stop on Red Week event is devoted to educating drivers about the dangers of red light running to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes resulting in serious and fatal injuries to bicyclists and pedestrians. Unfortunately, across the nation, the reckless act of red light running claims the lives of innocent victims daily.
In 2020, there were 14,321 red light running crashes in Florida. As a result of these crashes, 682 mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, and co-workers were seriously injured, and 97 more lost their lives. These injuries and losses were completely preventable!
Everyone has a right to arrive at their destination safely. So, please join us in our effort to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
