Survey of Florida lawyers indicates professionalism is a leading issue in the field
Chief Justice Charles T. Canady, in conjunction with The Florida Bar, has proclaimed November as Legal Professionalism Month in Florida. The proclamation serves to encourage all those working in the legal profession to rededicate themselves to exhibiting the highest standards of professionalism and ethics.
The Florida Supreme Court has exclusive authority to regulate the admission and discipline of lawyers in Florida, which is why having Florida Bar members exhibit exceptional professionalism in their practice is of high importance to the Court.
“I applaud The Florida Bar’s dedication to encourage lawyers to attain excellence in the practice of law in service to the people of Florida, to maintain and foster civility at all times, to support the advancement of the legal profession, and to strive for the highest level of professionalism in every respect,” Canady said. “Legal Professionalism Month is an important reminder of the Bar’s responsibility to instill in its members the need to practice ‘the principles of duty and service to the public, to improve the administration of justice, and to advance the science of jurisprudence.’”
According to the 2021 Florida Bar Member Survey, about one-third (32%) of respondents identified lack of ethics and professionalism as one of the most serious problems faced by the legal profession today. To address this issue, The Florida Bar’s Henry Latimer Center for Professionalism is releasing white paper this month on the state of ethics and professionalism in Florida law, and a look to the future.
Florida Bar President Mike Tanner has made improving the professionalism and ethics of Florida Bar members a top initiative during his term. Before his presidential term with The Florida Bar, Tanner was already an established expert in Florida on legal professionalism and ethics.
“Membership in the legal profession comes with a unique set of responsibilities and privileges, and if these are ever abused, damage is done to both the individual lawyer and to our system of justice,” Tanner said. “That is why we found it essential to dedicate the month of November to elevating the professionalism and ethics of every lawyer practicing in Florida. We at The Florida Bar appreciate Chief Justice Canady meeting this moment with us to prioritize the professionalism of our members and legal professionals throughout the state.”
