Senator Annette Taddeo filed Florida State Senate Resolution in support of the Cuban people

Posted on November 15, 2021

In relation to the peaceful demonstrations that started in July and continue today, November 15th, by the Cuban people calling for freedom and an end to an oppressive regime, Senator Annette Taddeo (D-Miami) filed a resolution at the state level — expressing solidarity with the people of Cuba, support of democracy, and an explicit condemnation of the oppressive nature of the Cuban regime against peaceful demonstrators. This follows a national Resolution Senator Taddeo sponsored and unanimously passed with the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators alongside Cuban-American Nevada State Senator, Mo Denis, to call on all governments in the Americas to pledge their support for democracy and freedom in Cuba.

Recently, the Cuban people planned a peaceful protest for November 20th, 2021, and the regime vehemently obstructed these plans by declaring November 20th, 2021 “National Defense Day”, a public attack to those who are brave enough to stand up to the regime. Now this protest is scheduled for today, November 15th, 2021, and we as the United States must show our support overwhelmingly to the Cuban people. They’re asking for basic human rights, respect and the release of political prisoners who have been wrongfully detained. We cannot allow this moment in history to pass us by, this is the path towards “Cuba Libre”.

Senator Annette Taddeo offered the following statement: “I filed this resolution today, November 15, in solidarity with the Cuban people, oppressed for 62 years by the totalitarian Castro dictatorship, as they stage mass protests in Cuba, calling for freedom and an end to the communist regime.  In July the world witnessed one of the largest movements in Cuba’s history, and those brave peaceful protesters were faced with mass arrest, violence, and attempts at silencing voices. The regime is so afraid of today’s peaceful demonstrations, that they have outlawed the wearing of white clothing, the selling of white roses or any white flower, and even the hanging of white sheets from their balconies. They have also surrounded the homes of dissidents with guards, preventing them from leaving their homes to peacefully protest. This heavy-handed response to 15N from the regime further proves the weakness of the totalitarian regime and we stand united with the Cuban people in their call for liberty and their stand against the oppressive communist regime.”
