Florida Planned Parenthood leaders respond to filing of HB 5 abortion ban legislation

Posted on January 11, 2022

This morning, Rep. Erin Grall and Sen. Kelli Stargel filed House Bill 5 and Senate Bill 146 to ban abortion in Florida beyond 15 weeks.

“Politicians need to get out of the way and stop attacking people who can get pregnant,” said Stephanie Fraim, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida. “A 15-week ban is cruel. It allows politicians to reverse precedent while pretending that’s not what they’re doing. Private, personal medical decisions need to be made by families and individuals using their own power and freedom – not politicians. Instead of doing their own work and listening to what their state residents want, politicians are going down a widely unpopular road and using arbitrary methods to serve their own political agendas. This is wrong.”

“Abortion shouldn’t be politicized. However we feel about abortion at different points in a pregnancy, a person’s health should drive important medical decisions – not political agendas. Politicians should make sure abortion is safe, legal, and accessible and then stay out of it all together,” said Lillian Tamayo, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood South, East and North Florida.
