Earlier today, HB 1407, sponsored by Representative Susan L. Valdés (D- Tampa), passed with unanimous bipartisan support in the Post-Secondary Education & Lifelong Learning Subcommittee. HB 1407 establishes the Hunger-Free Campus Grant Program within the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and designates eligible postsecondary educational institutions and campuses as ‘Hunger-Free Campuses.’
“Access to affordable, healthy food should not a barrier to Florida students getting a world-class education. Five states have passed a Hunger-Free Campus Bill since 2017. I am optimistic that Florida will recognize this need and act to ensure our students have everything they need to succeed in their academic endeavors. No one should have to choose between sustenance and an education,” said Representative Valdés.
Having passed favorably, the bill has been referred to the Environment, Agriculture & Flooding Subcommittee.
