Representative Yvonne Hinson (D-Gainesville) has proposed House Bill 6105. The bill will repeal Senate Bill 90 from the last legislative session.
Representative Hinson believes that Senate Bill 90 sets unfair election standards and regulations. She believes that elections are sacred. Access to the ballot box is paramount for a healthy democracy and a necessary ingredient for public participation. After a successful, secure election in 2020, changes to election rules are unnecessary. The regulations put in place create a barrier to the ballot box, especially for people of color.
Specifically, the proposed bill will repeal provisions relating to civil actions challenging validity of election laws, a prohibition on use of private funds for election-related expenses, and certain criminal penalties. Additionally, the bill revises provisions relating to voter registration, third-party voter registration organizations, changes in voters addresses, solicitation of voters, and stated penalties. The bill also returns the state to previous regulations applicable to vote-by-mail ballot requests and drop boxes.
“Senate Bill 90 was a short-sighted, unnecessary attempt to make our elections more secure. The security measures put in place will create a barrier to the ballot box, especially for people of color. We need to repeal this law. Access to the ballot box is crucial, making our elections accessible for all should be our top priority,” said Representative Hinson.
