The Florida Senate today unanimously passes CS/HB 45: Educational Opportunities for Disabled Veterans, filed by Representative Daisy Morales (D-Orlando). Senator Janet Cruz (D-Tampa) sponsored the companion bill in the Senate (Senate Bill CS/SB554). The legislation would allow those veterans who are deemed eligible the opportunity to receive a waiver for the remaining cost of tuition & fees at State Universities, Career Centers, Charter Technical Career Centers and Florida College System Institutions that they might not have covered by the federal GI Bill.
Representative Daisy Morales had this to say, “It’s great to work as partners to help disabled veterans who have scarified so much for our country with educational opportunities to eliminate challenges they face when they have given so much for our country and allow them to support their families.” We love our Veterans in the State of Florida!
“This bill will help our service members that have sacrificed so much for our country,” said Senator Janet Cruz. “Our disabled veterans face many more challenges when they return home. Supporting them when they leave active service is crucial in a state like Florida – a home to so many veterans. This bill empowers those individuals so they can receive an education without barriers and support their families.
Representative Christopher Benjamin (D- Miami Gardens) Co-Prime Sponsor of the House Bill stated: This Bill is another great step forward to ensure that FL is the most veteran friendly State in our Union. Veterans sacrifice much to protect our freedoms and interests. When they are hurt and are forced to restart their lives, this becomes an important resource to make sure that education will be readily accessible.
