Earlier this week, Representative Christopher Benjamin (D- Miami Gardens) and Representative Michael Gottlieb (D- Davie) passed HB 265 through both chambers of the legislature with unanimous bipartisan support. This legislation increases the value given to personal automobiles in certain legal proceedings, including bankruptcies. Allowing for new protections for Florida residents’ main mode of transportation.
Representative Benjamin issued the following statement, “An automobile is just as important to a person today as their homestead. And where we have given great deference to the home, we have not given proper attention to the importance of safeguarding the automobile that we use to get around to conduct activities important to our daily routines. The average worth of an automobile today far exceeds $1,000 and this new law draws us closer to an amount that protects the ownership of the vehicle and acknowledges its importance in our daily lives. I’m happy that Representative Gottlieb allowed me to Co-Prime sponsor this important legislation with him.”
