Florida Democratic State Legislators on SCOTUS Confirmation Hearings

Posted on March 23, 2022

In an historic moment to confirm United States Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman on the Supreme Court, as well as the first Floridian ever nominated, Florida Democratic State legislators offered the following statements in strong support of Judge Jackson’s historic nomination.

“This is a proud moment in our nation’s history and should be for all those who espouse freedom, and love this country. All Americans, regardless of race or party should share in this historic moment in time. “Possible” is front and center for girls and young women across the color spectrum and income levels. As expected, we’ve seen certain Republican senators take this opportunity to drag Judge Jackson through the mud to pander to their extremist base.

It appears that certain US Senators have no idea about what the role and parameters are and are using their time to drive a political agenda rather than sincerely vet Judge Brown based on her stellar career, her commitment to equal justice under the law, her love of this country and deference to the Constitution. Questions relating to her church congregation and religion have no place in hearings about Judge Brown’s above reproach and outstanding experience to become a Supreme Court Justice.

Who the prudent and thoughtful Judge Ketanji Brown is, speaks louder than anything her critics will say or imply. The tired tactic of character attack will not work against such a highly-qualified Justice nominee and I look forward to seeing her serve honorably on the highest court in the land,” said Senator Audrey Gibson (D-Jacksonville).

“While the GOP attempts to mischaracterize Judge Jackson’s impeccable record and attack her personal character, one thing is clear: Judge Jackson is an exceptional nominee to be a Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Our nation’s highest court will be better for her diverse breadth of experience, brilliant legal mind, strong moral character, and unwavering integrity. With Miami roots, she is certainly making Florida proud,” said Senator Tina Polsky (D-Boca Raton).

“Judge Jackson is exactly who we need to serve on the United States Supreme Court. She is fully qualified and has the strong support of my fellow members of the law enforcement community. Judge Jackson’s record of following the law with demonstrated impartiality, and service as a former public defender, brings a diversity of experience and qualifications that will provide a fresh new perspective to the Supreme Court,” said Senator Victor Torres (D-Kissimmee).

“This week is a proud moment in our nation’s history for all Americans, but especially for Black women and girls in Florida. As expected, we’ve seen certain radical Republican senators take this opportunity to drag Judge Jackson through the mud to pander to the extremist element of their base. Judge Jackson’s commitment to equal justice under the law and her love of America and the Constitution speak louder than anything her critics will say this week. It’s a tired tactic that will not work against such a highly-qualified candidate and I look forward to seeing Judge Jackson serve honorably on our Supreme Court,” said Representative Fentrice Driskell (D-Tampa).

Representative Carlos Guillermo Smith (D-Orlando) added, “With a record of bipartisan support, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson is the simply right person for the job. President Joe Biden has fulfilled his promise of not only nominating a Black woman, but one that is expertly qualified to serve on the Supreme Court. Not only does she have a long record of service as a jurist, but her service as a public defender gives her a unique view of the justice system that has been lacking on the Supreme Court and will be of great service to the American people. I’m excited to support her swift confirmation!”
